(CNN) — The Federal Bureau of Investigations is now involved in the investigation into allegations of excessive wait times at Veterans Affairs facilities. The Justice Department asked the FBI to help review key documents, according to law enforcement officials.
This is the first involvement by the FBI in the review being led by the VA Inspector General’s office. During a house oversight hearing Wednesday, the FBI director James Comey would only comment and say the agency was going to be very thorough.
The move at least partly satisfies requests from key members of congress from both parties who have pressed for a full probe by the Justice Department as the scandal accelerated recently to the resegination of VA Secretary, Eric Shinseki in May.
The Veterans Affairs office has acknowledged 23 deaths nationwide due to delayed care.
