Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Weed

WEED INVESTIGATION2WEED, Cal. — Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Deputies and the District Attorney’s office, California Highway Patrol, the Department of Justice Forensic Investigators and the Weed Police Department all responded to the Greyhound Bus station in Weed for an officer-involved shooting.

We have a reporter at the scene and will continue to bring you the most up-to-date information as it becomes available. Currently, we know at about 9:15 p.m. last night, Weed Police Department and Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office personnel encountered a male adult near Shastina Drive in Weed who was wanted for an unprovoked and vicious attack against a Weed Police officer earlier in the evening.

The earlier encounter between the male and Police officer happened at the Greyhound Bus station on S. Weed Boulevard. The suspect was contacted after he committed an act of arson by starting a fire on the wood porch directly in front of the bus station. When the Police made contact, the suspect refused to extinguish the fire and aggressively and violently resisted arrest, despite an attempt from the officer to stop the suspect with a taser. The struggle continued until the suspect jumped into the officer’s patrol car and attempted to steal the vehicle. The Police officer then used pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect and again attempted to arrest him.

The male suspect violently resisted, exited the patrol car and fled the scene on foot after grabbing the officer’s taser when it dropped to the ground in the struggle. A search by the Weed Police, Siskiyou Sheriff’s office and California Highway Patrol immediately sprung into action. Local officers and deputies found the suspect near the freeway overpass. After attempting to subdue him with a law enforcement canine unit, the suspect continued to violently resist arrest and tried to  injure the canine, the officer and deputy discharged their firearms and the suspect was struck. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. The identification of the suspect has been withheld, pending notification of his next-of-kin. This is still under investigation.
