Fatal Head-On Collision

MEDFORD, Ore. — Wednesday morning’s weather likely played a factor in the death of an 18-year old Medford woman following a two car crash on Foothills Road in north Medford.

Just after 8 a.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Deputies say an ’85 VW Jetta was headed north on Foothills Road when it lost control and slid sideways right into the path of a southbound Toyota Camry.

Sheriff’s deputies say icy conditions could have been a factor in the crash which closed down Foothills Road, between Vilas and Corey Roads, for about two hours.

“When you have a side-impact, you just don’t have any protection; no seatbelt is going to help you or anything like that from a car intruding into your door,” Jackson County Sheriff’s Sgt. Dace Cochran.

The dead 18-year-old is identified as Shelbi Stevens of Medford. The driver of the Toyota is 27-year old Ashley Villarreal of Eagle Point. Villarreal was taken to a Medford hospital with minor injuries.
