NEAR CAVE JUNCTION, Ore. — Oregon State Police (OSP) are continuing the investigation into Wednesday afternoon’s single vehicle fatal traffic crash along Highway 199 about eight miles south of Cave Junction. The crash resulted in the death of a 75-year old man and also led to critical injuries of a 65-year old woman.
According to Sergeant Jeff Proulx, a pickup truck driven by Floyd Dale Long from Crescent City was heading southbound on Highway 199 when the vehicle failed to remain its lane through a curve. The pickup crossed the northbound lane and crashed head-on into a tree.
Long, who was using safety restraints, was pronounced deceased at the scene. Also in his vehicle was Sandra Crockett, age 65, and also from Crescent City. Crockett was transported by Mercy Flights to Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford for treatment of serious injuries. It is still unsure if she was wearing a seat belt.
OSP troopers from the Grants Pass work site were assisted at the scene by Josephine County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois Valley Fire District, AMR ambulance, Mercy Flights, and ODOT.
