Walker, who served as commissioner from 1995 until 2010, died at midnight at the age of 73. He had been battling a number of debilitating medical conditions for years.
His niece and county clerk, Chris Walker, says he’ll be remembered as a man with strong convictions who was committed to his community.
“It’s just a sad day,” said Walker. “Jack contributed to his community, he loved where he lived, he loved the people of this community, and he gave so much.”
Walker had been suffering from Crohn’s Disease and diabetes — as well as a recent liver transplant, 6-way bypass surgery, and hip replacement.
He would have turned 74 a week from today.
