MEDFORD, Ore. – Hundreds are expected to pledge to eat local for the next week. Even more people will take advantage of the local food events and specials across Jackson and Josephine counties.
Now in it’s 7th year, Eat Local Week showcases the abundance the Rogue Valley has to offer, from produce to meats and dairy, wine and beer, just about everything is in season right now and starting Friday you can join in, buying, preparing, and eating local meals in the Rogue Valley.
A popular part of Eat Local Week is the “Eat Local Challenge”; there are four levels to meet a variety of commitments. “The Sampler” pledges to eat just two meals during the week with ingredients from within a 200 mile radius.
The most extreme, “locavore supreme”, consumes only food produced within 200 miles for the whole week, which means no coffee, no chocolate, and it excludes a lot of spices. If pots and pans and fresh raw ingredients aren’t really your forte, there are still plenty of options.
Eat Local Week also includes several workshops, movie viewings, and tours of local companies and to fit all that in, “Eat Local Week” actually runs longer than a week, it begins Friday and runs through the 16th.
