MEDFORD, Ore. – Matt Toreson made two free throws with 1.8 seconds left in double overtime to give South Medford a 65-64 win over crosstown rival North Medford in the Abby’s Holiday Tournament finals game on Saturday. The Panthers led by as many as 11 in the second half, but the Black Tornado closed regulation on a 13-2 run.
Tristen Holmes finished with 25 points, but the Panthers avenge their OSAA quarterfinals loss last year with an early statement win. These same two teams will play again on Jan. 11.
Across town, Cascade Christian High School hosted the boys and girls championship games for the Southern Oregon Subaru Christmas Classic. In the girls’ bracket, Mazama continued its dominant effort with a 56-30 win over Phoenix. The Vikings have now won their last three games by an average of 29 points per game.
In the boys’ bracket, North Valley stayed unbeaten as they cruise to a 57-33 win over Dayton. In nine of their first ten games, the Knights beat their opponents by over 15 points.
