[UPDATE 3:05 P.M.] Oregon State Police, with the assistance of Jackson County Sheriff’s Office deputy medical examiner, is continuing the investigation into the cause of an early Tuesday morning single vehicle fatal traffic crash on Highway 99 south of Phoenix. The victim was identified as 24-year-old Matthew Lee Wilson. Oregon State Police said next of kin were notified.
[ORIGINAL STORY] PHOENIX, Ore.– There was a deadly car crash near Phoenix on Highway 99 just after 3 a.m. Tuesday morning. Oregon State Police say a Jeep veered off the highway near Cabbage Lane and crashed into a power pole, then a tree, and into a ditch. This caused the jeep to become engulfed in flames.
The driver of the jeep was pinned inside when the fire broke out. The driver was pronounced dead when responders arrived at the scene. Police say they are not sure what caused the accident at this time, and have not identified the driver.
Highway 99, just south of Cabbage Lane, was reduced to two lanes for about a fourth of a mile. Oregon State Police will continue to investigate this accident.
