Dan’s Garden: Recycling in the Garden

video preview image

MEDFORD, Ore. — If you have a few things lying around, ready to go into recycling, you may want to save them for your garden. In this segment, we take a look at how just a few household items can help get the most out of your produce and plants.

There is so many things you can do in the garden with old water jugs or plastic jugs and panty hose. The first thing you can do is fill your water jugs or your jugs with water and if you need to lay a tarp down and you don’t want it to blow away you just anchor it with the jugs of water.

Also if you predict frost, and you have plants that need to be protected, there’s a couple different things you can do. One thing you can do is take jugs of water, put them out in the day and then put them around the plant. Keep the plant warm at night.

Another way you can keep the plant warm at night is to cut the bottom out of a water jug or a jug and then just put it right over the top.

Panty hose has a lot of different uses. Once you get your onions all cured, you can put them in panty hose and you can tie a knot between them. They get lots of air and they don’t rot that way.

You can also take panty hose, just cut off the leg and cut it into little strips, cut them so they’re just a single strip long and they make wonderful ties for tying up your tomatoes. Panty hose are stretchy and they don’t hurt the plants.

You can also take a jug and set it on the counter with the lid cut off, which can serve as a compost container. You got a handle to carry it out or you can take a belt put it through the handle and when you’re ready to pick berries, and you want to use both hands, you got your berry picking container.
