NEAR MEDFORD, Ore. — On Friday afternoon, emergency crews were on the scene of a reported fire at the Sierra Pine fiberboard and particle board plant on North Pacific Highway near Medford. That fire was first reported shortly after 3 p.m.
Medford Firefighters said because of the size of the building, they called in additional resources and engines from Jackson County Fire District 3. Crews said it appeared that the fire began above the press, then spread to the ceiling and walls. Firefighters were able to knock it down quickly, but did not have an estimate on the amount of damage it caused.
No firefighters were hurt during the operation. One Sierra Pine employee did suffer smoke inhalation, but was expected to be OK.
Fire crews do not yet know how the fire started, but said they believe it was accidental. They are waiting for the fire scene to cool before they go inside to inspect the electrical and mechanical components nearby.
