Crews Clean Up Hazardous Leak

TALENT, Ore. — Crews evacuated a Talent rest area after a truck driver reported a hazardous material spill.

Just before 11 a.m. on Sunday, Fire District 5 and Medford Fire crews responded to milepost 22 along I-5. The driver reported about a half of a cup of formaldehyde leaked from the vehicle. Sun Crest Rest Area was evacuated for several hours while hazardous material specialists investigated the area.

Upon arrival, the Medford Fire Hazardous Material Team found no evidence of formaldehyde residue on the ground, on the outside of the truck, or in a bucket the driver placed below the apparent leak site.

Truck company officials told fire crews it could’ve been some sort of water vapor.
