CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — John Beck and the Crater football coaches cooled off before practice on Monday afternoon, participating in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The Crater coaches will donate $200 towards ALS research and are challenging other coaches in the Rogue Valley to do the same. It was more than symbolic for Beck. His friend and former teammate at Southern Oregon, Jeff Young, was diagnosed with ALS three decades ago.
“You know it hits home for me a little more,” Beck said. “I’ll never forget the time we were told that he was afflicted with Lou Gehrig’s disease and he had a young child. It’s just unbelievable that somebody you know actually comes down with it so it hits home a little bit more.”
