CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — A driver crashes into a power pole causing several fires from the downed electrical lines.
The driver spoke to NewsWatch12 exclusively and says he was driving on Corey Road when the driver in front of him tapped her brakes.
He thought she was turning and he decided to pass her by using the side ditch. He says his ended up crashing into a fence, then into a power pole. As he tried to get out of the ditch, a good Samaritan rushed over to help.
“If he hadn’t pulled me out, I wouldn’t be here now. So, yeah. He put his life in danger because he saw the pole rocking but he came out,” said crash victim Terry Carruthers.
“No, anybody would have helped this fella. I didn’t do anything special,” said John Sphar, who saved the crash victim.
Several small fires sparked from the downed lines but were extinguished quickly.
The other driver in front of Carruthers did not want to go on camera. But she says she was unaware that her break lights were out. She said she tapped her breaks to slow Carruthers down. Both of the drivers received tickets. Carruthers received one for unsafe passing and the other driver for not having break lights.
Neighbors say car crashes occur frequently on Corey road. They often see people speed racing along that stretch of road.
