Driver Crashes into Pole Causing Fires

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — A driver crashes into a power pole causing several fires from the downed electrical lines.

The driver spoke to NewsWatch12 exclusively and says he was driving on Corey Road when the driver in front of him tapped her brakes.

He thought she was turning and he decided to pass her by using the side ditch. He says his ended up crashing into a fence, then into a power pole. As he tried to get out of the ditch, a good Samaritan rushed over to help.

“If he hadn’t pulled me out, I wouldn’t be here now. So, yeah. He put his life in danger because he saw the pole rocking but he came out,” said crash victim Terry Carruthers.

“No, anybody would have helped this fella. I didn’t do anything special,” said John Sphar, who saved the crash victim.

Several small fires sparked from the downed lines but were extinguished quickly.

The other driver in front of Carruthers did not want to go on camera. But she says she was unaware that her break lights were out. She said she tapped her breaks to slow Carruthers down. Both of the drivers received tickets. Carruthers received one for unsafe passing and the other driver for not having break lights.

Neighbors say car crashes occur frequently on Corey road. They often see people speed racing along that stretch of road.

I was the passenger in the truck in front of Terry Carruthers. This story isn’t exactly accurate. The only light that was out was the passenger side tail light on my friends trailer. Carruthers was traveling at a high rate of speed as my friend was turning left onto her property. Why he decided to pass on the right is beyond me. He simply was going too fast to stop in time and lost control of his vehicle which ultimately caused his truck to flip and break the electric pole. Also, I have to say that it was my friend and John who pulled out Carruthers from his truck as live electric wires were falling. I am very glad that Carruthers is alive and that we all survived this accident. It could have been so much worse.

wonder if anyone remembers this man terry carruthers from when he killed tre chase 02/96. someone saved his life while he took a 2 and half year olds life. shame . now parents get to see how he was rescued while their son is gone.

Sounds like this man shouldn’t be driving at all! I also heard that he just had surgery on his hip and he couldn’t stop because his leg was too weak to apply the needed pressure to stop his truck! Wondering if he was also on pain medication.

That report is such rubbish, I’ve lived in that area and drive that road every day for the past 20+ years and rarely see people race on it. I can only recall a couple accidents.

Mr Carruthers was not speeding at all, he really thought the person was going to turn the other direction, as the light blinked. She swung wide, meaning she started turning in direction of blinking light, but then as he was passing, she swung back in front of him. If a blinker is blinking in a direction, and the person starts to turn that direction (to swing wide) one would feel it was safe to pass, not knowing it was a wide swing to turn.
