MEDFORD, OR. — After a life-threatening stroke, 88-year-old Mary Hedge of Yreka, California was not sure if she would ever be able to tie the knot with her sweetheart. On Thursday, she did just that.
Hedge has been at Providence Medical Center since her stroke 6 weeks ago, and Steve Tarnay was by her side the whole time.
She and Tarnay have been dating for about four years after they met in a senior care facility. When her family came to visit on Thursday, they decided to recruit the hospital chaplain to marry them.
The ceremony was in Mary’s hospital room, and the bride and groom were surrounded by friends and family. Both Hedge and Tarnay said it was a very spontaneous decision, and Mary feels lucky to have Steve in her life.
“He’s taken on a big burden here because i don’t know if i will ever get back to full capacity. I’m trying. I’m going to try as hard as I can try, but I don’t know what’s going to happen and he knew that and still he married me and took care of me,” said Hedge.
