MEDFORD, Ore. — On Wednesday afternoon, police responded to a report of suspicious activity at the Black Bird Shopping Center in Medford. Store employees believed a male who had entered the store was attempting to steal a .40 caliber ammunition and a holster.
No actual theft occurred in the store, however police reached out to the suspect, Andrew James Caucutt. Not only is Caucutt a convicted felon but also on felony probation for felon in possession of a firearm.
Based on evidence that was found on the scene, police had reason to believe he possessed a handgun within his residence. Under Oregon State Law, as a convicted felon, he is prohibited to own a firearm. This allowed Medford police to then obtain a search warrant for his home in Central Point.
Upon investigation, officers located a loaded Springfield Arms XDM semi-automatic .40 caliber handgun. This gun was also within reach of a five year old child who lives at the residence. It turns out the gun also was stolen during a burglary in White City.
Caucutt was taken into custody and is currently in the Jackson County Jail facing charges for felon in possession of a firearm, theft in the 1st degree, recklessly endangering, and probation violation as a felon in possession of a firearm.
