6 - a medford parent says her son wbalkenbush who te the new system will make it tougher to get inside. if you're wanting to go inside a medford school this year, you'll see a doorbell like this one that's already installed at washington elementary. you'll need to hit the button, say who you are and why you're here and that's when someone in the office will let you in. one parent tells me this door being locked during the school day means her son can feel safe again. [a29]medford upping school security-pkg "i wasn't going to send him to school until they had a lock on that door." magan hassell tells me the parkland shooting had a lasting effect on her 12-year-old son isaiah... who was a student at washington elementary. "that was his last day at school, he didn't feel safe to come back and i didn't bring him back until they had the buzzer system installed." for more than 50 days - isaiah did his work from home. that's when magan made her voice heard.. going to public meetings to push for tighter security and get support from the community. washington principal sallie johnson says she's been hoping for a new system for awhile now too. "safety is a number one priority, academics don't happen if our kids don't feel safe and our staff doesn't feel safe so we need to be safe. the doorbell comes with a giant t-v that sits inside the office. that way, staff members can hear.. "i'm emma balkenbush with newswatch 12." and see anyone wanting to come in. magan says she's glad she pushed so hard. once the system was put in, isaiah didn't skip a beat coming back. i brought him fifteen minutes after they gave me the call and said the door was locked we were hear to bring him to school." the district says the new systems cost about 100 thousand dollars. some schools already have them installed. they won't all be done by the time school starts.. but the district hopes to have them all up and running by the end of september.. reporting live in medford, emma balkenbush, newswatch 12. the
