a senior laden south medford baseball team began its quest for a state title today. you probably know by now they're doing it without their head coach, ray smith, who's still on administrative leave. so south's maturity really important at this stage of the season... today they went up against centennial at harry and david field. scott carle leading the panthers into their third straight playoff appearance... hoping to keep his team even keeled and let the talent shine through. ===== top one, we have liftoff... jack thompson... staying true to his name and hitting a jack. way gone to left. his three-run bomb puts the panthers up, right out of the chutes. ===== south sent brandon latinder to the bump today... maybe he didn't have his best stuff... but still was a ground ball machine when he needed to dial one up. centennial had the bases loaded here, a run does score, but the damage is limited. ===== to the second inning, clint campbell did a little bit of everything. a single to start things off.... then a steal to set himself up in scoring position... ===== and thompson licking his chops at another rbi opportunity. his fourth ri-bee of the day. south takes care of business and wins 7-4. that sets up a second round home playoff game on wednesday for south medford. sprague coming to town after a 9-nothing win today. the olympians the third place team from the greater valley conference, they'll be making the trip down from salem. the other 6-a game we had our eyes on today was north medford and west linn. the lions were just too much for north and eliminate the black tornado with a 9-0 win. they'll get greshman in round two while north's season comes to an end. [e6]6a sb reynolds at north medford-intro with seven state championships to its name, north medford softball has been the class of class six for quite some time. but as the black tornado began a defense of their latest crown, they knew this year's challenge would be immense. nine seniors from last year's roster gone... a whole bunch of new faces, hoping to write their own legacy. the barry sisters... and the three seed black tornado against 30 seed reynolds in the first round of the playoffs. probably not a winning strategy to throw the ball around against north medford... but the raiders did a whole lot of that... two free bases for neveah smith... it brings her into score, and that ties the game at one. ===== rylan austin uncharacteristically gave up a run in the first, but she was tough to hit after that... six strikeouts in six innings for the right hander. ===== back to work goes the offense in the third ... bases loaded, this should be routine... but reynolds again not able to play catch. north with the lead... they wouldn't look back. ===== lauren barry a sparkplug at the top of the lineup... one of her three hits ... two of her five rbi... as kylie baker and lily gann score. ===== reynolds just kept pouring salt in the wound... you get the point by now... north cruises in round one, 14- to-4 the final. grants pass softball hosting sprague...lady cavers the number 7 seed in the 6-a tournament... ===== first inning...alyssa etheridge gets the scoring started... grounder up the middle ...bobbled by the shortstop...haley dougherty scores... lady cavers on the board...1 nothing... ===== second inning...jordan up... ball gets out in a hurry...way out to left field...that's a two-run shot...make it 3 nothing lady cavers ...but sprague bounced back... ===== down 3-1...the ball gets by to the back stop...one run scored ...throw to the plate off the mark and another run would score...all tied up at 3... ===== with the wind blowing out...the lady cavers exploded in the third ... noga lofts it into left... brooklyn hurd comes in to score to make it 4-3... ===== 7-3 now...so deep into the inning...hurd comes back up to bat ...and leaves the yard ...yanks it out to right field...that's a grand slam... an eight-run third inning keys the lady cavers to the first- round win...12-6 your final...they will host west albany in the round of 16 on wednesday. south medford meanwhile was bounced today by oregon city. the panthers were riding high after winning their play-in game, but their luck ran out against the five seeded pioneers. texas tech commit morgan hornback tosses the shutout and oregon city rolls 12-0. so the second round games are officially set for north medford and grants pass. the black tornado getting a familiar foe in sheldon, a team they've beaten three times this season. grants pass also at home, the cavers will square off against ten
