degree weather welcomed in the baseball season yesterday... today, mother nature wasn't so kind to the start of softball season. at a rainy us cellular fields, north medford, south medford, grants pass and eagle point squared off in the opening jamboree. [g6]hs softball jamboree-vo for the black tornado, it means the start of life without mike mayben. after a 12-year run as head coach, mayben decided to step down and give way to former assistant chris campbell. it's huge shoes fill, and campbell sure knows it in his seventh season with the program. as the 8-time reigning conference champs and defending state champs, campbell took me back to his reaction when he heard mayben was leaving north medford. chris says, "i was shocked. i wasn't prepared for that. i've enjoyed working with mike for a long time and then he approached me and said, 'hey you need to really consider taking over the porgram,' and i said let me discuss it with my wife and figure out what's best for us. so then i had some long talks with mike and decided, yeah, that's the way i wanted to go."
