Title: Sports Anchor/Reporter

Jake García joined the NewsWatch 12 team in May 2017.

Jake was born in Riverside, California, but grew up in Turlock, a town in California’s Central Valley. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism in his first three years at Arizona State University, and a master’s degree in mass communication to conclude his studies in his fourth year.

Jake’s love for sports storytelling began when he was young—at the age of eight, he provided hand-written coverage of the Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Broncos and San Francisco Giants in spiral-bound notebooks. His audience engagement peaked at five people—his mom, dad, brother, sister and best friend. Although he still considers himself a Broncos and Giants fan, his fandom is now mostly concentrated on his fantasy baseball and fantasy football teams.

Jake is the oldest of three—his sister plays collegiate golf at Cal State San Marcos and his brother will eventually be at UC Davis—and his parents are teachers (his mom teaches high school AP Spanish and his dad is a social work professor). Everyone in his family is fluent in Spanish except for his dad.

In Jake’s spare time, he’ll either be exercising—lifting weights, snowboarding, training for marathons, and taking recreational sports leagues way too seriously are all on the table—or thinking of his next creative standup.
