Chief Meteorologist Kate McKenna joined NewsWatch 12 in June of 2014. Originally from Kentucky, Kate spent her college years on the Gulf Coast as a student at the University of South Alabama in Mobile.
Her love of weather began at age nine, when she was in a historic hailstorm in Bowling Green, KY. While seeking shelter inside the industrial freezer of a local grocery store, hail averaging 2.5 inches in diameter pummeled the vehicles parked outside. After witnessing the devastation, Kate developed a fascination with the force that ultimately resulted in a half-billion dollars worth of damage to the area.
Kate’s passion drove her to study both Meteorology and Geography, earning a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology from the University of South Alabama. Kate has worked at the ABC affiliate WBKO in Bowling Green, Kentucky, CBS affiliate WKRG in Mobile, Alabama, and most recently was the morning meteorologist at KAVU in Victoria, Texas.
Outside of work, Kate spends most of her spare time with her husband and their two cats, Burt and Ollie. She loves kayaking and skiing, and of course, keeping an eye on the skies!
