MEDFORD, Ore. -- Students from Sacred Heart Catholic School here in Medford have been collecting Thanksgiving type foods over the last few days. Now it's time to get these boxes out of the church and into the community.
"We know that there are people out there who cannot possibly afford that Thanksgiving dinner," said Sacred Heart teacher, Sharon Levesque.
Sacred Heart Catholic School runs a Thanksgiving basket drive every year. Each classroom is responsible for putting together a box full of your traditional Thanksgiving foods for people in need.
“It's not necessarily homeless people that might not be able. It's just people that just don't have the income right now who to be able to provide a nice Thanksgiving dinner," Levesque added.
Tens of thousands of people in Jackson County need help every year. ACCESS said it helped nearly 27,000 people keep food on the table last year. While ACCESS does not know how many people will come by this year, Executive Officer Pamela Norr said all of the food drives in the community help.
"There is ALWAYS a huge need, especially when the weather gets colder and you know right now we have a lot of people in our community that are in need of food. So these local drives really help us make an impact," Norr said.
The kids and teachers at Sacred Heart are happy to lend a hand.
"This is something that I can do to give back. And it makes me feel good because I'm really helping everybody. And it just feels good to drop off food and knowing that you're making somebody’s day a little bit better, or family even," Eighth grader, Grant Russo said.
"When you're able to give of yourself or give something to those in need, i think that's something we all really enjoy doing," Levesque said.
