UPDATE: The search for 17-year-old Samuel Allen in the waves off Rockaway Beach has been suspended, according to a statement from the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG). Search efforts ended at 9:42 a.m. Thursday morning, after a number of agencies and craft responded.
"As we've come to the difficult decision to suspend this search, we extend our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy," the statement read. "We also want to thank all our partner agencies who assisted with search efforts for their dedication and service to the public."
According to the Coast Guard, they received a call regarding the incident on Wednesday afternoon from Samuel's step-mother, relayed through Tillamook 911. The step-mother reported that Samuel had been seen struggling to get back to shore, and that Robert Allen had jumped into the surf to assist his son. She then said that she'd lost sight of both of them, according to USCG.
USCG units responded—including a 47-foot Motor Life Boat, two MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters, the cutter Swordfish, and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.
Rescuers did locate Robert Allen in the water, but he was later pronounced dead after failed attempts to revive him.
"Throughout the day, multiple reports came in from good Samaritans of objects in the water, with only sea lions seen at the first location and a crab pot buoy located at the second location," said the USCG statement.
Many of the USCG crews searched through the night, but were unable to locate Samuel Allen.
According to the USCG, sea conditions were one to two foot high seas, swells up to eight feet high, 11 mile per hour winds, but good visibility.
Coast Guard crews were assisted by OSP, Rockaway Beach Fire and Rescue, Rockaway Beach Police, Tillamook County dispatch and Tillamook County Sheriff's Office personnel.
