MEDFORD, Ore.- Around 700 people funneled into Bethel Church tonight to hear the former governor speak.
Organizers said media outlets couldn't record his speech, but NewsWatch12 interviewed him before he took the stage.
Mike Huckabee says, "The attitudes about abortion are changing, most importantly from younger women. Younger women are more pro-life as a generation and their mothers and grandmothers largely because they can't ignore the science."
NewsWatch12 called Planned Parenthood and asked what an end in state funding could mean for women with unplanned pregnancies. It said "Limitations on abortion can have profoundly harmful effects on public health, particularly for those who already face significant barriers to receiving high-quality care, such as low-income women, immigrant women, young women, women of color and LGBTQ people."
Laurel Swerdlow, Interim Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon went on to say, "Oregon Life United and extremist politicians like Mike Huckabee are out of touch with Oregon values. In 2014, Mike Huckabee made outrageous comments about women seeking affordable birth control to prevent unintended pregnancy and to stay healthy, claiming ‘they cannot control their libido’ without ‘Uncle Sugar.’ If these extremists were truly committed to reducing the number of unintended pregnancies, they would work with Planned Parenthood to increase access to affordable birth control and comprehensive sex education.”
NewWatch12 asked Huckabee to respond. He said, "They have incredibly misquoted what I said. I didn’t say that, in fact what I said was the people who continually believe that women can’t function without government are treated as if they are helpless without government that was the whole point."
Huckabee went on to say, "I care that Planned Parenthood has missed the value of every human life, that they think some lives are the expendable and disposable. I don't. I think the kid with down syndrome is just as valuable as the captain of the football team."
After petitions to de-fund abortions in 2012, 2014, and 2016 failed to make our state ballot, pro-life supporters are hopeful for November. The petition would need thousands of signatures by July 6th to make Oregon's 2018 ballot.
More statements from Planned Parenthood:
“When a woman is living paycheck to paycheck, denying coverage for an abortion can push her deeper into poverty. Studies show that a woman who seeks an abortion but is denied is more likely to fall into poverty than one who is able to get a safe abortion."
“Planned Parenthood Advocates of Oregon will fight to ensure that abortion remains safe, legal and accessible in this state. We believe deeply in the right of all people — no matter who they are, where they live or what they earn — to make their own personal decisions about their bodies, their families and their life’s path, without political interference."
More statements from Mike Huckabee:
"The state of Oregon has taken one of the most radical positions on abortion anywhere in the country. It’s the only state that has no restrictions at all on abortion."
"Abortion can happen in the state right up until the moment of birth and what makes that worse is the taxpayers found it so people who have a conscientious objection about the taking of a human life in the women are forced to pay for it."
"Many people who believe in abortion rights believe it shouldn’t be taxpayer-funded so what does constitutional amendment would do is it would at least restrict the funding of abortion and not force every citizen of Oregon to pay for the 10 abortions per day that happen in the state paid for by taxpayers"
