Right now, there's a recycling crisis-- and its affecting us here in Southern Oregon.

That's because China-- the world's largest buyer of recyclables-- is going to ban some items-- and have stricter policies on the items they buy.

Its leaving some collection companies with no choice but to send tons of recyclables to the landfill.
Right now, there's a changing market for recyclables-- China says it will ban imports of certain plastics and papers next year.

Of the material it will accept-- it wants less than 1 percent contamination.

Garry Penning with Rogue Disposal and Recycling says before the DEQ gave them a concurrence, meaning an approved use of the landfill for recyclables in this crisis, they had reached 1440 tons of stockpiled recyclable items- after just a month.

They've been able to ship some of that material to the landfill since the approval by some cities.
They’re still waiting for formal approval from both Central Point and Jacksonville.

They still have about 1000 tons of recyclable material sitting waiting to go to the dump.

Garry Penning says, "What we're asking folks to do now is to continue to recycle like they have, because if the markets improve we can start these new programs and immediately start shipping stuff out, but they got to clean it up, no more wishful recycling."
