JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. — A Grants Pass man was arrested Friday by Oregon State Police detectives following an investigation into alleged child abuse injuries that have a 2-year old boy in critical condition at a Portland-area hospital.
It all started on December 5th, when a 2-year old boy was taken by his mother and step-father to Three Rivers Community Hospital in Grants Pass with a diagnosed head injury. Police said the boy was then transported to Rogue Valley Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery before he was taken by Mercy Flights to Doernbecher Children’s Hospital in Portland.
After the child arrived at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, medical staff discovered more injuries. Detectives from the OSP Criminal Investigation Division, with the assistance of Josephine County District Attorney’s Office, started to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s injuries. According to a press release, on December 7th, OSP detectives arrested the child’s step-father, 32-year-old Damien Rafael Gulick, and lodged him in the Josephine County Jail for Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Mistreatment in the First Degree.
Police aren’t releasing the name of the child who is in critical condition. Questions regarding this investigation should be directed to the Josephine County District Attorney’s Office on Monday when an arraignment is expected to occur. OSP Detective Bryan Scott is the lead investigator.
