It’s an annual May Day event, but this year’s marches come as new immigration legislation is being discussed or becoming law at both the federal and state level.

A bipartisan immigration bill is currently being discussed in Congress, which would allow many people living in the U.S. illegally to start the path to citizenship.

In Oregon, the governor signed a law last month that would allow undocumented immigrants to get in-state college tuition rates. Just this week, the state legislature passed a bill that would create a short-term driver’s license for undocumented residents.

Local groups are also meeting for May Day. Local groups advocating for immigration reform said in a press release that they will meet at Alba park from 3:30 to 4:00 p.m. A march will start at 4:00 followed by a rally at 5:00 in Vogel Plaza with local speakers.

The Oregon House has passed two bills targeting those protesters.

A first offense would be a misdemeanor and subsequent offenses would be felonies. The other bill would allow logging companies to sue demonstrators who interfere.

Anti-logging demonstrations stretch back to the 1980s, but picked up again in 2011, when demonstrators protested increased logging in the Elliott State Forest.

The legislation would require Oregon to cast its seven electoral college ballots for the candidate who wins the national vote, rather than the one who gets the most votes in Oregon. Nine states with 132 electoral votes have enacted it, about half of the 270 needed to win the presidency.

Supporters say the workings of the electoral college mean presidential candidates ignore all but a handful of swing states.

Critics say Oregon shouldn’t interfere with decisions made by the constitution’s authors. The House’s 38-21 vote Thursday sends the measure to the Senate.

The proposal was part of a compromise struck by a Democratic and Republican Senator. It was backed by President Obama but faced fierce opposition from the National Rifle Association.

Congress is still considering other gun control legislation, including a proposed ban on military-style semi automatic firearms.

Kate Brown is calling for accountability among public universities in Oregon. Her office released an audit of the state’s university system.

The Secretary of State’s office says tuition has increased faster than inflation and the state has spent less on higher education since 2001.

Kate Brown’s office also reports student debt among students at public universities in Oregon is 9 percent higher than the national average.

While calling for changes in tuition rates and other areas, the Secretary of States’ office didn’t make any recommendation on how to do that.
