KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A car crashed into the College of Cosmetology building in Klamath Falls on Thursday night after police say the driver experienced a medical emergency.

Police first saw the 2002 Ford Focus around 11:54 p.m., traveling northbound on East Main Street at a high rate of speed. Police say the car failed to obey the traffic sign at East Main Street at Orchard Avenue, and then crashed into the College of Cosmetology building, causing major damage.

Officers arrived to find the vehicle on fire with the driver trapped inside. Officers suppressed the flames with a fire extinguisher, broke the driver’s window, pried open the door and pulled the driver to safety. The fire spread to the building, and three engines from the Klamath County Fire District #1 responded to quickly extinguish the fire and prevented further damage to the building.

The driver was identified at 37-year-old Zukeysha Jefferson. Police determined she suffered a medical emergency, which caused the collision. She was transported Sky Lakes Medical Center by ambulance with minor injuries.

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have been filed at this time.
