Car Crashed Into Pole, Caused Outage

MEDFORD, Ore. — Medford Police say a driver was possibly under the influence of a controlled substance when he crashed his car into a pole and caused a temporary power outage on Monday.

On Monday afternoon, police responded to the 1300 block of Siskiyou Blvd where they found a black 2005 Mercedes sedan had somehow lost control and struck a power pole. The pole was nearly broken off and had fallen over while being supported by the power line.

The crash caused a power outage for several blocks surrounding the accident scene. Pacific Power reported on their website that about 300 customers were affect by the outage.

Police blocked off Siskiyou Boulevard for approximately three hours until PPL Electric could repair the power line. Additionally, Medford Police say the power line had fallen onto the roof of a nearby house but did not cause a fire.

Police say the driver, 21-year-old Gray Allen Smith, failed sobriety tests and was arrested for DUI-Controlled substance. He has been charged with driving under the influence of a controlled substance, reckless endangering another and criminal mischief in the second degree.
