The call came in around 5:42 p.m. Thursday evening, when the sheriff’s office said someone called in to report a a green Subaru was driving recklessly on Upper Applegate Road and nearly struck another car.
The crash occurred about a mile down Little Applegate Road. The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said the driver was identified as 74-year-old Gary Mumblo, of Jacksonville. Mumblo was driving a green 1996 Subaru Legacy.
The telephone pole Mumblo struck broke off completely, leaving a portion of the pole hanging by power lines above the shoulder of the road. The sheriff’s office said Mumblo was extricated from the remaining portion of the vehicle.
During extrication, Mumblo reportedly fought with rescue crews while responders worked to stabilized him for transport to Providence Medford Medical Center. He was transported via Mercy Flights helicopter. During the transport, Mumblo died from his injuries.
The sheriff’s office believes alcohol played a role in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
