California to Regulate Groundwater

waterSACRAMENTO, Calif. — Lawmakers in California continue to push legislation to regulate groundwater in the state.

Right now, California is one of the last states in the west that lets residents pump as much water as they want. Yesterday the state senate passed a bill that would require some local governments to start managing wells.

It also authorizes the state to step in under certain circumstances when those governments fail to act.

Critics of the bill say it will create a situation where state and local governments are policing water supplies, and the new rules could conflict with property rights.
