MEDFORD, Ore. – Vacationers up and down the Rogue Valley are enjoying their long weekend, but downtown restaurants and bars say that isn’t exactly good for business.
Memorial Day weekend is the first big weekend for camping. That means campgrounds like Emigrant Lake are nearly full and downtown is empty.
Places like Elements Tapas Bar manage to keep a steady flow of business by virtue of being one of the only places to stay open on the Sunday before Memorial Day.
“A lot of people are closed on the Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. So we end up doing okay because we’re open because we’re one of the places who are still servicing guests,” said elements owner Chris Dennett.
Dennett says despite being one of the few restaurants open, it still does less business than on a normal weekend.
