MEDFORD, Ore. — Firefighters took out a small brush fire burning brush along the Greenway. Officials at the scene say, except for brush and shrubs on the path, the fire only made it to a couple trees.
Medford Fire and Rescue got the call after 11 a.m. on Saturday from several people who saw the fire as they were driving on the freeway. Oregon Department of Forestry was also called to the scene as a precaution.
Firefighters put out most of the flames and smoke, reported less than a mile away from McAndrew’s Road in Medford. Officials say the fire could have started in multiple spots along the Greenway, or a light breeze could have caused it to spread. They say the cottonwood tree seeds, which have a light fluffy consistency, catch fire very easily.
Fire officials say if you see a small fire while you’re on the bike, call 9-1-1 and try to give the most exact location possible. The bike paths in our area stretch for a while, so try to look for a landmark or a street name to help firefighters arrive at the best location.
