Southern Oregon teams went two-for-two in the final day of the high school sports season. The North Medford softball team repeated as state champs, beating Glencoe 2-1, while Henley hammered Newport 12-5 in the 4A baseball championship.
The Black Tornado’s game against Glencoe lived up to the hype with pitchers Maryssa Becker and Katie Sutherland-Finch. The game was scoreless going into the seventh when Becker hit the lead-off batter, who later scored on an RBI groundout. The Black Tornado answered with an RBI double from Alexis Barkwell in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game and send it to extras. In the bottom of the eighth, Grace Jovanovic delivered the game winning RBI single to win the championship for North. Becker pitched eight no-hit innings, struck out 13 and the only base runner she allowed was the hit batter in the seventh.
Meanwhile, in Salem, the Henley Hornets avoided any late inning drama. Henley scored two runs in each of the first four innings on their way to a 12-5 win over Newport. Josh Overstreet dominated at the plate, going 4-5 with a home run and six RBI. Lead-off man Cody Dykstra added three hits and two runs in the winning effort.
