Authorities Warn of “Grandchild” Scam

JOSEPHINE COUNTY, Ore. — Oregon families are being warned about a scam, in which a caller poses as a grandchild in trouble to get money. Two recent incidences have been reported in eastern Oregon.

An Oregon State Police detective says, in one case, the imposter was using newspaper anniversary announcements or obituaries to find names of family members.

Indications of the scam include: requests that the money be wired in a short amount of time; claims to be in a foreign country, an insist on secrecy or citing incorrect personal information.
