MEDFORD, Ore. — More than 450 athletes hit the bowling alley at Lava Lanes Saturday for a regional tournament. Special Olympics held a competition for athletes from Klamath Falls, Brookings, Cottage Grove, Roseburg, Jackson and Josephine County, among other locations.

It was the final tournament of the year for the organization. In the past, the athletes would compete in a statewide tournament after the regional competition. But, funding issues have been holding them back.

Janet Capetty with Special Olympics Oregon, said the athletes enjoy any chance to compete.

“Our athletes are really grateful for all the help they get and they are just happy to be able to have the opportunity to participate,” said Capetty.

About 250 volunteers helped with the event.
