PORTLAND, Ore. — An Oregon college athlete is fighting to stay on his team after he says his coach forced him to choose between religion and football.
Vincent Johnson plays for the Portland State football team, but he hasn’t played since the Spring when he went to his coach with a problem. According to Johnson he told his coach he was going to miss four practices because they conflicted with his church’s services. Johnson claims his coach would only allow some of the absences.
“He asked me to choose between church and football. I said, ‘coach, you can’t ask me to do that. It’s like asking me to choose between god and football,’” says Johnson. Johnson has filed a complaint with the university, which is still under investigation.
In the meantime, the school says Johnson’s tuition and scholarship are safe and secure.
