MEDFORD, Ore. – A record number of people traveled through the Medford Airport this summer. It’s the first time ever in the airport’s history to accommodate more than 66,000 passengers in the month of July.
This year, the airport served not only the most out of every year’s July, but the most its ever served. Airport officials say the closest number to reach this amount still loses by more than 6,000 and that was set back in 2007.
The average month on any given year is around 50,000 passengers – a number dwarfed by the numbers in July. The airport doesn’t operate 24 hours a day, but if it did, these numbers break down to servicing a passenger every 40 seconds each day operating around the clock.
“Well, July’s always a good month, but last month we had additional service to Oakland and additional service to Phoenix, probably had the best service we’ve ever had, and that impacts it,” states Airport Director Bern Case.
Expectations for the rest of the summer are high as well, but officials aren’t expecting another record month.
