MEDFORD, Ore. — The Oregon Department of Forestry says the Medford Air-tanker Base can serve up to four air-tankers. Two air-tankers leased to ODF are currently being used to fight fires across the South West area.
ODF, Jackson and Josephine Counties are paying for the aircrafts. Officials say the tankers are headed where it’s needed the most.
“Life and property is at risk, that’s where the retardant goes. So, we’ve got some areas now where rural homes are and threatened by the flames and they’re going to be seeing a lot of retardant bombers all overhead for the foreseeable future,” said ODF spokesman Brian Ballou.
Each air-tanker can hold between 16 hundred and 3 thousand gallons of retardant.
