Accused Shooter Changes Plea

MEDFORD, Ore. — A man suspected of attempted murder changes his mind in court and says he wants to go to trial.

Aaron Merlina was set to plead guilty in Jackson County Court on Tuesday, but he surprised the judge, the prosecutors and even his own attorney by deciding he wants to hire a new lawyer and go to trial. He said in court he made the decision without meeting with his counsel.

Merlina was charged with two counts of attempted murder after police said he fired shots through the door and window of a home in Talent on Thanksgiving Day 2011. He was set to take a plea deal today for five years in prison before his surprising decision.

Judge Tim Barnack said he would give Merlina a few days to think and the District Attorney said the offer will be on the table until Thursday.
