GRANTS PASS, Ore. — On Sunday, the Grants Pass Downs hosted its ninth and final day of races this year, attracting both first time visitors and dedicated fans. The finale came with an elegent theme: Fancy Hat Day.
“We just decided to treat it like it was the Kentucky Derby and have a good time with it,” said first-time visitor Rita Rose.
The weather on race day hasn’t always been warm and sunny this year. Even through some rainy days, horse racing director Wes Brown says this year’s turn out is on par with last year.
“The fans love horse racing. It’s an icon here in Josephine County and Grants Pass. We’ve been running horses for fifty years and this year is no exception,” said Brown.
Brown says it’s been a safe year with no serious injuries to the horses and only bumps and bruises for riders who fell off.
