GRANTS PASS, Ore. — For the first time, there is a race for Josephine County Legal Counsel and the two names on the May ballot will be familiar to voters. Steve Rich is the incumbent and has served as county legal counsel since 1994. Rich has always run unopposed and said in his years of experience he has guided dozens of county officials.
Rich said his experience in his position is the most obvious advantage he has over his opponent.
“I’d be able to continue to provide the legal advice and representation that I have previously provided to county commissioners, department heads, appointed officials and other managers for Josephine County,” said Rich.
His opponent is current state representative Wally Hicks who has represented his Josephine County district since 2011. Hicks is not seeking re-election for his seat in Salem and is instead hoping to be elected to Josephine County Legal Counsel. He said he will carry over his philosophy of serving the people.
“This race comes down to one question. Who does the Josephine County Legal Counsel work for? The answer is supposed to be the people and that’s the philosophy I’ll bring to this job,” said Hicks.
